BMR and TDEE calculator for nutritionists and dietitians

Calculate an adult’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) with the three equations most used in practice, side by side. The values are estimates: a starting point for the meal plan.

EquationBMR (kcal/day)TDEE (kcal/day)
Harris-Benedict (revised, 1984)1,4401,970
Mifflin-St Jeor (1990)1,3801,890
FAO/WHO/UNU (1985)1,4201,950

Values rounded to the nearest 10. TDEE is BMR multiplied by the activity factor. This does not replace an assessment by a nutrition professional.

How to use the result

Start with the Mifflin-St Jeor value and track body weight over the following weeks: if weight stays stable at that intake, the estimate was right; if it changes, adjust. For weight loss, a moderate deficit from TDEE is usually easier to sustain than large cuts.

Frequently asked questions

Which equation is most accurate for basal metabolic rate?
In adults, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is usually the closest to indirect calorimetry, which is why it is the most recommended starting point. Even so, it is off by more than 10% in a share of people: treat the value as a starting point and confirm it with weight changes.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy spent at rest. Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) adds physical activity and the digestion of food, and is calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor.
Which activity factor should I choose?
The one that matches the person’s typical week, counting both work and exercise. When in doubt, choose the level below: people tend to overestimate how active they are.
Is this calculator suitable for children, pregnancy or athletes?
No. The equations in this calculator were validated in adults. In pregnancy, childhood, acute illness and elite athletes, energy needs are estimated differently.
